Forward deployed engineer is AI’s hottest job as OpenAI and Google race to hire. Here’s how to become one.

Welcome, TNS Daily readers! We have added this Saturday newsletter, which focuses on the breakneck world of AI and software development and is written by Matt Burns, Chief Content Officer at Insight Media Group. We hope you enjoy this weekend's feature on the rapidly evolving world of forward deployed engineers. (And scroll to the end of this email to read our TNS quote of the week.)

OpenAI launched the Deployment Company this week, a $4 billion push built around staffing corporations and enterprises with forward deployed engineers.

The next day, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian went on LinkedIn to recruit for the role, while Google Cloud had 59 related roles open and reported that the company plans to hire hundreds. Meanwhile, Anthropic embedded its FDEs inside FIS to co-build an anti-money-laundering agent. And ServiceNow and Accenture also launched a joint FDE program.

This all happened within the last 10 days.

If you’ve been wondering which AI job is durable, pays well, and isn’t a hype role like prompt engineer in back in 2023, the answer is becoming obvious. The forward deployed engineer is the bridge between an AI model and a working production outcome inside a company. And the path to becoming an FDE seems doable: Learn the AI engineering stack, build with real workflows, and train the customer-facing judgment most engineers avoid.

Why the forward deployed engineer is tech’s hottest job (January 2026)
What FDEs do, and why they are well-suited to meet the demands of the Age of AI.

Why 157,000 developers are hedging against Anthropic with OpenCode
Anthropic blocked third-party access, and 157,000 developers turned to OpenCode as a hedge. The move has confirmed a rising demand for model-agnostic coding.

How to build a skills library for your engineering team
Standardize coding agents, fix agent sprawl, and keep developer workflows aligned.

GitLab is betting a 19th-century economic theory will shape its AI era
GitLab is laying off staff and rebuilding its platform from the ground up, betting that the AI era will create more software — and more demand for the tools that manage it.

Claude Code agent view is a better dashboard. Why aren’t developers convinced?
Anthropic's new agent view in Claude Code centralizes multi-session management, but developers say better visibility won't close the trust and reliability gap holding back agentic AI.

Tanzu Platform’s 15-year head start meets the AI moment
Tanzu Platform spent 15 years building the integration, governance, and observability enterprises now need to deploy AI safely and at scale.

From vectors to tensors: Expanding the possibilities of AI search
Vector embeddings changed search, but they represent only a single point in space. For complex, multimodal, or highly nuanced ranking, you need more dimensions. You need tensors. Catch the replay for a concise, practical primer on why tensors are the next leap for production AI.
